What is the Chinese zodiac sign

The Chinese zodiac is a traditional classification scheme based on the Chinese calendar that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating twelve-year cycle. In traditional Chinese culture, the Chinese zodiac is very important and exists as a reflection of Chinese philosophy and culture. Chinese folkways held that one's personality is related to the attributes of their zodiac animal. Originating from China, the zodiac and its variations remain popular in many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, and Thailand.

The Chinese zodiac sign is composed of tweleve animals from the nature, namely, rats, cattle, tigers, rabbits, dragons, snakes, horses, sheep, monkeys, chickens, dogs and pigs. It is used to record the year.

Each person uses the animal symbolizing the year of his birth as his zodiac sign, so Chinese folk people often count age according to the zodiac. One cycle is one round.

The Chinese zodiac signs share similarities with the Western zodiac signs: both have time cycles divided into twelve parts, each label at least the majority of those parts with names of animals, and each is widely associated with a culture of ascribing a person's personality or events in their life to the supposed influence of the person's particular relationship to the cycle. The 12 Chinese zodiac animals in a cycle are not only used to represent years in China, but also believed to influence people's personalities, career, compatibility, marriage, and fortune.

For example,Rats are quick learners; oxen are reliable and diligent; tigers are natural born leaders and rabbits tend to be quiet and alert. Dogs are loyal friends, and horses and pigs are great to be around.

Dragon is also one of the animal signs. Unlike in western culture, this fictional creature stands for bravery and ambition in China.

Though snakes are given negative traits in many parts of the world, as one of the 12 zodiac signs, it represents intelligence and mystery.
